Affiliate Marketing is Revolutionizing Retail Sales

In the past, people who had information to sell generally published books, which were primarily sold in book stores. The mechanism was awkward and expensive, and only people with a great deal of cash or those who worked with publishing companies were able to sell their work. With the growth of the Internet, the nature of how information is sold has changed, making it easier than ever for individuals to sell their knowledge.

The growth of e-business has created a new form of selling information, known as affiliate marketing. With traditional retailing, a retailer had to buy merchandise from a wholesaler, pay to store it until the time of sale and hope that he could sell it. If a sale was made, the seller kept a fraction as profit. Affiliate marketing changes the very structure of how merchandise is sold by eliminating the need for the seller to purchase the product in advance and store it. There is no need for the retailer to stock the product at all. All the retailer, or affiliate, has to do is advertise the product.

The principal products in current affiliate marketing are mostly e-books or software, which can quickly be delivered by download once the sale is made. If a sale is made, the buyer downloads the merchandise from the publisher and the affiliate gets a portion of the sale price. All the retailer has to do is promote the products to prospective buyers.

The changes in the nature of sales via affiliate marketing are good for both the affiliate and the creator of the product. The affiliate can devote his or her time exclusively to marketing; it is not necessary to manage the product in any way. By aggressively promoting their products, both the retailer and the creator or publisher benefit without the costly overhead formerly necessary in retail sales. The publisher of the product benefits from motivated sellers, as the entire process is strictly based upon performance.

Affiliate marketing is often promoted as a "sure fire" method of earning money while doing little work. That type of hype is deceiving; what you derive from any project is directly related to how much time and effort you put into it. For sufficiently motivated retailers, affiliate marketing can be fairly profitable. Discovering products to sell is pretty simple, and people who are interested can find products to sell at Websites such as Clickbank.com. For anyone who is interested in retail sales without a lot of headaches, affiliate marketing is one possible road to success.
