Not all outside influences are negative. Many times, friends and family members will support your journey. You have to hold onto these positive influences and block out the negative flack. The positive influences you receive will help fuel your motivation and drive.
There are many ways to deal with negative influences. First, you can refrain from telling people about your entrepreneurial journey. The positive side of this choice is that people cannot criticize your choice if they do not know it. The negative side of this choice is that you may be blocking out people who want to support you. You should not have to sacrifice support in order to prevent negative influences.
Second, you can ignore the negative influences. This may be easier said than done if the negative influence comes from somebody important to you. However, if you truly desire to achieve your version of success, you can “ignore” the negative influence and explain to that person that your entrepreneurial journey is very important to you. This should prevent any future negativity from that person.
Last, you can use the negative influence as motivation. We all know that positive reinforcement helps to motivate; however, some people use negative influences as a means of motivation. These kinds of people use the negativity as fuel for a “I told you so” kind of motivation. These people are motivated for the sole purpose of proving others wrong. I am not a supporter of this type of motivation, because everything you do should be for the benefit of yourself and your loved ones. Proving somebody wrong is not my cup of tea, but everybody is different.
Control your outside influences and you will learn how to control your motivation and ultimately, your success.
